the ReCollective Mission

The Problem

At The ReCollective, we see the story of our stuff heading down a one-way street – globally, we turn 100 billion tons of raw material into products annually, but the vast majority of these products flow through the economy and are emitted as pollution through carbon from fossil fuels, deposited in landfills, or scattered in the ocean or elsewhere. Over-consumption, over-packaging, the linear economy we can’t help but be a part of, recycling markets and costs, and many more issues live at the heart of the challenges posed by our broken, unwanted, or unusable things. The more trash we make, the more we subject our communities to poor health and environmental outcomes. Our ecosystems suffer when our stuff is discarded without a second chance. So much of what our regular curbside recycling programs can take is limited, and the options for those materials require a dedication of time and research that many of us simply don’t have the bandwidth for. There is an urgent need for innovative and sustainable solutions to close this circulatory gap. The ReCollective helps households reduce waste and supports the circular economy.

The Solution

Recycling should be easy, accessible, and transparent. ReCo works to close the circularity gap by offering a service that helps households handle their waste that cannot be collected through single-stream recycling without taking too much time or effort. The materials we accept historically have had low recycling rates, such as plastic film, expanded polystyrene, textiles, batteries, light bulbs, latex paint, and small electronics. These materials are sorted, packaged, and supplied to local businesses and community organizations for recycling or reuse. We offer this service at a low cost so that this convenient hard-to-recycle solution can be accessed for almost as low as the gas it would take to drive the materials yourself. We also are determined to provide our members with transparency so that they know that the ReCollective is helping them make a difference by diverting their waste with circular community solutions.

The ReCollective launched in September 2022. We will publish impact reports quarterly, which can be accessed below.
