New Recycling Service: Clear Clamshell Recycling with The ReCollective
At The ReCollective, we’re always striving to expand our services and make recycling as convenient as possible for our members. We’re thrilled to announce that we now offer recycling for clear clamshell containers made of polyethylene terephthalate (PET or PETE). These containers are commonly used for packaging items like berries, vegetables, salads, herbs, some deli items, and even some egg cartons.
Understanding Clamshell Recycling
Clamshells are a tricky item when it comes to recycling. While some municipalities within our service area may offer curbside recycling for these containers, this isn’t a universal option. It’s essential to review your local recycling guidelines to determine if clamshells can be included in your curbside recycling. If your local service doesn’t accept clamshells, or if you’re looking for a more reliable option, The ReCollective’s clamshell recycling service is here to help.
How the Clamshell Service Works
Since not every ReCollective member needs clamshell recycling, we’ve made this an add-on service. You can request a clamshell recycling bag through the Member Dashboard Shop, with prices ranging from $2 to $4 depending on your needs. This service allows you to recycle your clamshells without having to store them at home for extended periods.

ReCo Pick: A Limited-Time Clamshell Collection
We understand that many of our members enjoy participating in the ReCo Pick, where we periodically collect various materials, including clamshells, from your doorstep. While we try to include clamshells in the ReCo Pick as often as possible, they’re currently planned for collection about once a year due to the sheer volume of different materials we manage. The clamshell add-on service is a convenient solution if you don’t want to wait for the next ReCo Pick or need more frequent recycling.
Where Do Your Recycled Clamshells Go?
We’re proud to partner with Orange Recycling Services (ORS) for our clamshell recycling efforts. ORS is a locally owned and operated commercial recycling company that has served the Durham area for over 34 years. They’re a trusted partner in ensuring that your recycled clamshells are handled responsibly and effectively.
