What materials do you pick up?
There will be regular items every pickup and ReCo specials (seasonal items) one or more times per year. Some of the materials we pick up include plastic bags, Styrofoam, textiles, batteries, electronics, latex paint, lightbulbs, kitchenware, and art supplies. See full details of the materials we accept.
Where do you pick up my items?
We pickup on your doorstep. Please put all of your canvas bags in the larger waterproof bag and close the drawstring. This will ensure the materials don’t get wet.
You may leave special instructions to our drivers in the member portal.
What is the 55-gallon translucent bag for?
ReCo provides a 55-gallon translucent bag for members to collect styrofoam, and we ask that you wait to put out your styrofoam bag until it is full. This helps conserve bags!
We have heard from some members it takes too long to fill up the 55-gallon bag or that they have large pieces that don’t fit in the bag.
Now you can skip the 55-gallon translucent styrofoam bag if you like!
♻️If you have a small amount of styrofoam (like one or two small pieces), just put those pieces in your black waterproof bag on pickup day.
♻️If you have one large piece of styrofoam, just set it next to your black waterproof bag on pickup day. Make sure it is in a place or pinned down where it will not blow away.
♻️You can still use the 55-gallon translucent styrofoam bag if desired but wait to put it out until it is full.
Where do you operate?
We operate in Durham, Raleigh, Chapel Hill, Apex, Cary, Morrisville, and Hillsborough. We plan to expand to other nearby areas soon. So if you currently live outside our service zone, signup for our waitlist by filling out the first page of our customer registration. As soon as we launch in your area, we will let you know.
The ReCollective now also offers a mailback program if you live outside our service zone but within 450 miles of our warehouse.
Will I get a reminder of when my service day is?
Yes, we send out both an email and text reminder the day before your monthly service. You may also see upcoming service days in the member dashboard. You can opt-out of this if you like.
What time of the day do you do pickups?
We ask that members put out their materials by 7am the morning of their pickup. Our team typically services between 7am and 5pm, but it can be as late as 7pm.
Do you have a dropoff location?
No, our warehouse is not suitable or set up for members to drop off materials.
What if I missed my pickup and didn’t put out my items?
We typically service neighborhoods monthly. In some cases, we may be able to reschedule your pickup, but this means our team has to travel extra miles outside of a planned route. An extra fee will apply to help cover these costs. Please contact help@therecollective.co to request a reschedule.
What if there is bad weather on my service day?
We will contact you via email and text on when your day will be rescheduled to.
What if one of my bags is empty at pickup time?
Please put out all of your canvas bags, even if they are empty. Our team pre-makes complete canvas bag kits for you for each new pickup.
Keep your 55-gallon translucent styrofoam bag until it is full.
Can I opt out of my monthly pickup?
Yes, if you do not need service this month, just opt out when you receive the text reminder or in the customer portal. Customers that opt out will receive a $5 credit on their account.
What if my materials don’t fit in the bag?
For plastic film, textiles, and styrofoam, you may add a BYOB (bring your own bag) for an extra $4 fee. This service can be added to your next pickup through the member dashboard shop. Please only put one kind of material in each bag. We request this bag be 45 gallons or less so that it fits in our cargo van.
Can I share my bag capacity with friends, family and neighbors?
YES, you may share your bag capacity — Your friends, family, and neighbors can put materials in your ReCo bags. The one exception we do ask of this is Batteries and Lightbulbs since these are the most complex items for our team to manage. Feel free to share your bag capacity for Plastic Film, Textiles, Styrofoam, ReCo Picks, and more!
We believe that sharing is more equitable for small households and will allow us to recycle the most materials per pickup, which is better for the environment!
Fill up your bags!
What if I'm unsure the material / item I have is acceptable?
Just email us a picture at help@therecollective.co

I received an incomplete bag collection kit or my bags are missing.
Please contact help@therecollective.co for assistance.
How do I know which material goes in which bag?
All our convas bags are labeled with the material type. You may learn more about the materials on our material page. To find out the ReCo pick material for the month reference ReCo pick section. Styrofoam goes in the 55 gallon plastic bag.
What should I do with my empty Fillaree soap bag?
When we pick up your hard-to-recycle materials, you can also add Fillaree soap to be dropped off! But it doesn’t stop there – we also pick up your empty soap bags with your recyclables and return them to Fillaree.
Remember to keep the spout and put the closed tight cap and bag in your waterproof ReCo bag for pick up.

Composting & OneStop

Who is your composting partner?
ReCo partners with Brooks Contractor to turn your food scraps into nutrient-rich soil!
Do you take BPI-certified compostable items?
We shy away from compostable plastics. Bambooware is acceptable. 1) Plastics certified by the Biodegradable Products Institute must meet a standard of carbon conversion to CO2; however, they do not biodegrade into nutrient-rich soil. 2) Contamination is an issue because it is hard to distinguish truly compostable materials from plastic. 3) PFAS are a concern.
Food Scrap service is not in my area. When will it be available?
We plan to continue expansion in the coming months and throughout 2025.
Do you offer a Food Scrap-only service plan?
Not at this time. We offer Food Scrap pickup as an add-on service to Hard-to-Recycle Plans.

How do I manage my membership?
Use our customer portal to manage your account, see pickup dates, and rotating categories.
How do I cancel my membership?
Use our customer portal to cancel your membership.
Why do you charge for this service?
To operate this service we have to rent a warehouse, pay fair wages to warehouse and driver employees, purchase and maintain cargo vans, maintain proper insurance and licenses, and in many cases we have to pay partners to properly recycle these materials.
Why do you charge extra fees for certain items like fluorescent tubes and latex paint?
Our partners charge higher fees and we incur higher distribution costs to manage these materials. Charging extra fees for these items helps us keep our core service cost low.
Do you offer gift certificates?
Yes, members can purchase gift certificates in the member portal.

How do I know my stuff gets recycled or reused?
We plan to publish regular reports on where materials are sent and how much is recycled or reused.
Do you offer a referral program?
Yes, members can generate a unique referral code link in the member dashboard. When the link is used, both the member and their friend save on their next subscription payment.
Are you a non-profit?
No, we are a for profit corporation with a social mission.
Do you offer commercial service?
Our partner company Gather Green provides this service. https://wegathergreen.com.
How can I help?
Tell your friends, family, and colleagues about this service.
Will you offer additional materials for pickup?
We plan to expand material categories and relationships with local organizations as the service grows.
Won’t the vehicles doing pickups create emissions?
We are looking at ways to offset and reduce this through efficient processes and carbon offsets and capture. If an individual household attempted to recycle all these materials themselves at various drop off points around the Triangle using a gas vehicle, there would be vastly more emissions per household.
