- People living in high-income countries own, on average, 109 electrical devices per capita, while those in low-income nations have just four.
- 137 billion pounds of e-waste was generated globally in 2022.
- 22.3% of this e-waste was found to be recycled in an environmentally sound manner.
- Since 2010, the growth of e-waste generation is outpacing recycling by almost a factor of 5.
- As a result of non-compliant e-waste management, 128 thousand pounds of mercury and 99 million pounds of plastics containing brominated flame retardants are released into the environment every year.
- When e-waste ends up in landfills, the toxic materials dissolve into a sludge that collects at the bottom of the landfill, before sinking into the ground and permeating the groundwater.
