Transform Food Scraps into Community Impact with Community Compost!

Looking for an easy, affordable way to compost? We’ve got great news! The ReCollective, in partnership with Toward Zero Waste, has launched Community Compost in two Durham neighborhoods and is now expanding to find new community composting sites in Durham, Chapel Hill, and Cary. This program brings convenient, local drop-off locations right to your community, making it easier than ever to recycle your food scraps and reduce waste.

Community Compost offers a cost-effective solution for those who want to compost but don’t need doorstep service or prefer not to drive to distant municipal sites. For just $3.15 per week, members receive a 4-gallon Purple Bin for food scraps and other organics. These bins can be emptied at secure drop-off sites in your neighborhood, where the scraps are transformed into nutrient-rich soil by Brooks Contractor, a leading commercial composter.

But that’s not all—each participating community gains access to a personalized impact dashboard, allowing members to track how much they’ve diverted from landfills and the positive environmental impact they’re making. This dashboard is easy to share, helping your community spread the word about sustainable practices and inspire others to join the movement.

Optional Add-On: Discounted Hard-to-Recycle Service
Members of Community Compost can also take advantage of discounted doorstep pickup for hard-to-recycle materials like plastic bags, styrofoam, textiles, batteries, and lightbulbs. This service makes it easier than ever to responsibly manage items that can’t go in your regular recycling bin—reducing your environmental footprint even further.

Why Choose Community Compost?
