The ReCollective, Toward Zero Waste and Monster Organics Partner to Expand Community Composting Across the Triangle

Partnership will expand convenient community composting and neighborhood food-scrap drop-off options across the Triangle

DURHAM, N.C., Monday, October 19, 2026 – The ReCollective, Toward Zero Waste and Monster Organics have formed a new partnership to expand community composting and convenient food-scrap collection across North Carolina’s Triangle region.

The partnership builds on the Community Composting program launched by The ReCollective and Toward Zero Waste in 2024. The program now serves nine communities, giving residents a convenient place close to home to drop off their food scraps.

Under the new partnership, The ReCollective will manage memberships and coordinate participating locations, Toward Zero Waste will lead community education and engagement, and Monster Organics will service the shared collection carts.

Together, the three organizations plan to bring the program to more neighborhoods, apartment communities and other residential communities across the Triangle.

How the program works.

Community Compost members collect food scraps at home and bring them to a shared collection cart in their neighborhood or community. The program offers a convenient, lower-cost alternative for residents who may not have easy access to municipal drop-off sites, do not have space for backyard composting, or may not need or want a full-service doorstep collection option.

Community Compost members can also add home pickup of hard-to-recycle materials through The ReCollective, including grocery bags, chip bags and other crinkly packaging, styrofoam, textiles, batteries, electronics and more. This gives residents the option to use a nearby community site for food scraps while having hard-to-recycle materials conveniently collected from their homes.

Participating communities also receive updates showing how many pounds of food scraps they have diverted from the landfill, helping residents see the collective impact of their efforts.

New Community Compost locations generally require at least five participating households. Neighborhoods, apartment communities and other residential communities interested in joining the program or establishing a new location can contact The ReCollective at help@therecollective.co or learn more about Community Compost with The ReCollective.
