Election reminder

Election Day is November 4th. Here’s to hoping voters choose leaders who care about the community, the country, and the planet. Prosperity, democracy, and justice are prerequisites for lasting environmental progress.

With turnout typically around 10–15% in North Carolina’s municipal elections, your vote carries even more weight.

As the holiday season approaches, we’re taking a moment at ReCo to reflect on what we support with our choices, and we encourage others to do the same.

Are we buying from companies that take end of life responsibility for their products beyond the landfill? Do the platforms we engage with strengthen communities? Are the people behind the brands we support using their influence for good?

Too often, the honest answer is no. Let this season be a reminder that how we spend shapes our world.

Food donations

After earlier cuts to food assistance programs and
the decision to withhold SNAP funding during the shutdown, food banks across North Carolina are seeing surging demand.

This month’s ReCo Pick is a simple way to help: add non-perishable food to your pickup bag to support local hunger relief efforts. As a bonus, include
freezer packs, clean takeout containers, or insulated grocery bags to keep meals moving and fresh.

ReCo impact graphic

This summer, ReCollective members helped keep 29,560 pounds of material out of the landfill, giving more than 9,000 cubic feet a second life. About half was composted, a quarter recycled, and a quarter reused or reimagined.

We also washed and recirculated 7,350 ReCo bags, continuing our focus on reuse first. Every pickup, every purple bin, and every bag adds up. Learn more

Pumpkin composting

Once the jack-o-lanterns and fall decor have served their time, toss them right into your Purple Bin or Community Cart, just make sure they’re free of paint, jewels, and candles.

Got outdoor space? Letting pumpkins break down naturally is a simple way to feed wildlife. Some farmers markets (including The ReCo Booth at Durham Farmers’ Market on Nov 1 and 8) and towns also run pumpkin drop-offs. Check local options.
